The Register of Deeds' Archival Room is a climate-controlled environment that consists of original hand-written documents dating back to 1719. The Archival Room stores historical records, the McCrady Plat Collection, the Gaillard Collection, and other relevant material pertaining to land records.
Additionally, some of the records stored here are from Colleton and Berkeley Counties during the period 1881-1899.
Adjoining the Archival Room is the Preservation and Restoration Room, a climate-controlled environment where great care and skill is required to repair, restore and preserve the history of past generations for future generations.
The digitization of historical documents is done on a high resolution scanner (an i2S SupraScanTM Quartz A0 – the same type of scanner used at the Library of Congress) in order to achieve the finest detail for document preservation. The ROD's Imaging Department compresses these files after they are scanned and makes them available online.
The following records are available online and are updated frequently:

Karen Hollings and the Register of Deeds staff are highly committed to the preservation of the records belonging to the citizens of Charleston County. These collections are irreplaceable and are made available for the public for the public's convenience.
